New Wave Social Media + Technology

Social media is definitely the communications wave of the future. Our students and younger teachers know that. It's harder to catch the new wave for those of us who still remember dial telephones, black and white t.v., stenography machines, and going to the post office to send snail mail letters to our distant family and friends. But make no doubt about it, it's coming every one's way!

Your TSU executive has been working very hard to electronically safeguard the unit's many records in a more useful manner. There are boxes full of paper, forms and reports going back decades, with lots of valuable, but often nearly inaccessible hard copy information, at the TSU office. Once catalogued as computer files they can be very useful, for example, in writing up new grievances. The benefits include researching what TSU has done to help you in the past, and providing our unit with an institutional memory, that won't be lost as members come and go over the years ahead!

I've been excited to assist your TSU committees this year. They are very eagerly moving us ahead into the 21st century with the new technology. Our members are coming up with their own new ideas to make it possible. We've had fabulous brainstorming sessions and friendly debates. In the case of TSU PAC, our Political Advisory Committee, all the files from TSU's past provincial election campaigns are being organized to be copied onto our computer system. Our BTC (Beginning Teachers Committee) is very keen to set up a special web-page on the TSU website for our new teachers. Useful BTC documents, reports, forms and background information will be posted there. Maybe even a FAQ. Our Safe Schools' Committee is organizing a page too, with links to all the safe school materials we should be aware of as classroom teachers, documents, reports, forms, interesting and varied analyses you might not see elsewhere. With the new technology at our fingertips, the sky is the limit!

I'm very keen about pursuing these new and exciting possibilities! Should I have the honour of being re-elected your TSU 3rd VP on May 11, I will continue to actively facilitate your committees many new, exciting technological initiatives. It will also be interesting to see what  impact the new social media you find here on my election site, like blogs, twitter messages and even Facebook links, will hopefully have in getting my election message out in a new, more interesting and meaningful way. More effectively than days past when a candidate might simply send you a paper flyer, maybe even engage in a few poison pen e-mail exchanges, then give a droll speech about themselves, and expect you to vote for them. How could anyone expect to vote in an informed manner, for choice candidates that way, in this day and age?

If re-elected I will continue through my TSU 3rd VP site to communicate with and serve you, our members. You should always come first. That's what elected office is all about. Your many constructive ideas
shared in response to my blogsite are incredible. The offers of help and support are very much appreciated. Let's continue to explore how social media and technology can help us reach out and catch the new wave of positive change to enhance our meaningful TSU dialogue and activities now, and in the years ahead.

Yours,

David Chiarelli
