Respect Life!

This year's Respect for Life [RFL] Week is from May 8th to the 15th. It culminates with the Ottawa March for Life on May 12th. With help from your Religious Affair [RAC] committee, and this year's TSU executive, our teachers are now organizing for the march, and planning next years as well!

As TSU 3rd VP, I was honoured to help you organize our students for the big launch, at the March 27th Respect for Life Youth Leadership Conference. With grassroots support, our student participants tripled in number! It was awesome to spend an informative day with our next generation of young Catholic leaders! Just consider all the awful negative pressures they face outside school growing up in the world today. Still they respect the Sanctity of Life, as being at the very core of their Catholicity!
We are truly blessed!

The work continues. Your independently teacher organized and run RFL Week Planning Committee may often meet at the CEC because it's centrally located. Still, they are certainly not otherwise a board funded committee. At our own TSU members' request, this year's RAC recommended we offer them some much needed help to jump start, if you will, the preparations for our once very active TCDSB school wide Respect for Life Week activities. Your TSU staff reps were sent the Youth Leadership Conference flyers to deliver to our school mailboxes, plus those for Fr. Rosica's "Catholics + the Media" student presentation, planned at St. Pats. TSU executive unanimously approved this, and also to pay for our students' youth conference lunch.

At present TSU RAC are hoping to follow up on our student's youth conference, to help organize the school bus trips to the May 12th March for Life in Ottawa. As your TSU 3rd VP I look forward to jointly working with the RFL Week Planning Committee, the TCDSB, and our local parishes, to help our students get there.

I work very hard to to help develop these initiatives  For me the celebration and Sanctity of Life is a basic tenet of our Catholic faith, and teaching at a Catholic school to educate our youth is not just a job, it is my vocation. As a Catholic social justice advocate I will not sit on my hands waiting to see how others will vote at any meetings on Life issues, nor try to grab the Life flag afterwards, to race to the front of the parade, and belatedly lead the charge. I will not be discouraged by any set backs but will keep building upon our recent successes for next year, and the years ahead, to help our future student Catholic leaders achieve their goals.

Should you vote me the honour of being re-elected as your TSU 3rd VP, here is what I can do to help get the job done next year. I want to be the TSU Executive liaison for RAC. I will work with your committee to develop your Life plans and funding requests. Our executive members have been very supportive of Life initiatives. But the executive always needs to do a lot to address your many very different and very necessary TSU teacher needs. And it takes a lot of time and effort to organize and  develop an effective long term Respect for Life Week plan. I can help do that.

We need to build strong Life ties between our teachers, students, parishes and the board. We need to review and discuss this year's efforts with all our partners to build on our successes. We need to figure out effective RAC time and budget lines well ahead of next year's Respect for Life Week and Ottawa March. I can help do that.

Above all, we need to help and encourage our students to get involved in advocating for the Sanctity of Life, as a positive, life affirming cause, in a world where their leadership is so badly needed, now and for future generations to come. Like you, I believe our responsibility is to serve others. What greater service can we strive for but to help them prepare? When we reach out to them, we touch the future. Let's reconfirm the Catholic in our Ontario English Catholic Teacher Association by doing so now, so that OECTA never  becomes just Catholic in name only.

Please don't hesitate to contact me here through my blogsite with any questions, comments or for any assistance you might need. And kindly pass my http://tsu3rdvp.blogspot.com/  link on to our TSU colleagues. Can you help me in my campaign by distributing  flyers, making phone calls, and speaking to others at your school, before TSU election day? I also need individual voting scrutineers at each school for balloting this year.

If there is any way you can help, please let me know. And on May 11th, please vote for me to help keep our student and teachers' Respect for Life plans moving forward.

In Life,

David Chiarelli

PS: Please also contact me about how to get student and teacher guide books for setting up a Respect for Life Club in your school!
