The party leaders will attempt to pre-empt the Court Challenge with their own press conferences today. The goal is to try plug into or steal the union's thunder. They are: Andrea Horwath 9:15/ Tim Hudak 10:00/ Dalton McGuinty 12:00.
Hudak annouces he would cut taxes + lay off civil servants if he were premier: http://www.thestar.com/news/canada/politics/article/1269396--ontario-conservatives-promise-tax-cuts-new-subways-if-elected?utm_source=twitterfeed&utm_medium=twitter
McGuinty holds his press conference to explain how a wage freeze saves jobs before 100 people in a small room. He doesn't expect a spring election. The Tories are not nice etc. etc. etc. The small crowded room is a media technique to creates the optics that everyone is real interested and crowding in to hear what he has to say. Education Minister Education Laurel Broten announces International Day of the Girl. Sure! But right now? She's obviously quite excited. Woman's Directorate is one portfolio she does with aplomb. Some pundit's claim she wasn't a good match for the Education Ministry from the get go. You don't see the same enthusiasm or tight grasp of the issues. Anyway, see the Youtube video: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=jym55m-dNw0&feature=youtu.be
The media's set up + ready for the big Court Challenge announcement on Bill 115, and here I am at a meeting with the board. Sigh! Alas! See: https://twitter.com/osstf/status/256432807210016769/photo/1

The media frenzy: The more coverage the better for getting the story out. However, it can be hard to control the messaging at any press conference. Today they were most interested in the possibility of a strike. Let's see what makes the news reports: https://twitter.com/osstf/status/256439882824704002/photo/1
Post event scrum. Here's ETFO President Hammond. He also noted elementary unit strike votes are completed + ETFO will be announcing next steps in the next few days: https://twitter.com/osstf/status/256445117823610880/photo/1
Here's OSSTF President Coran. He also noted secondary units are filing for conciliation. https://twitter.com/reevesreport/status/256444681662119936/photo/1
Read CTV's article on the press conference. They got the democratic rights message straight: http://ottawa.ctvnews.ca/unions-launch-legal-challenge-of-ontario-teacher-bill-1.992017

Here's a good one! Dalton wants you to go on line to let him know how to make Ontario a better place. Guess he's been scratching his head trying to figure it out!?! Of further note: Check out his "Blog" link. I think I will suggest he add funny little pictures along the sides and at the bottom of it. Yeah! That should fix things! In the immortal word of Baby Huey, "Duh": https://correspondence.premier.gov.on.ca/en/feedback/default.aspx
McGuinty has forgotten his school lessons. A school mom gives him a refresher course. Poignant but fun! See:http://www.broadbentinstitute.ca/en/blog/mcguinty-should-head-back-school-lesson-democracy
Here's ETFO's excellent news link page to articles about their members recent teacher protests across the province. You may have read a lot of these here all ready on my blog especially from the GTA and Ottawa papers. However, find out more about what's been happening in the outlying regions, often as reported in the local newspapers. Go to: http://www.controlyourfuture.ca/etfo_news/province-wide-media-coverage-of-protest-actions/
Summary: A great media event! The University Ave Court House once again makes for a great backdrop. The messaging was very good too. The focus on defending the democratic rights of Ontarians is sure to stir the patriotic cockles of hearts across the province, more than "collective bargaining" would. My bet is it will play well everywhere, even here in big bad cynical Toronto [or "Ta-ranna" /or/ "Toe-ron-o" as we local natives pronounce it, depending upon where in the city you are from]. From coverage I have seen so far, including Global TV Ontario's dinner time news just now, the media was kept on topic, and doesn't have much to say about the strike angle story. One senses they can smell it though and are going to keep barking on about this until they can sink their teeth into something meaty. Morning barrage of party leader announcements did not succeed in burying the story but does eat away at the space given to reporting the event.
Overall? A+
