OBAMA WINS RE-ELECTION!!!
Romney slow to concede but gives gracious concession speech! Obama delivers a forceful + passionate barnstormer afterwards at nearly 2am! Victory seems to rest comfortably + confidently on his shoulders. Top notch! Let's see if he has hit his stride for the next 4 years ahead!
Watch Obama's acceptance speech "The Best is Yet To Come", see a great slide show and read the article at: http://www.huffingtonpost.com/2012/11/07/barack-obama-victory_n_2086420.html?ir=Canada
A late night news report posted after Romney conceded defeat. See: http://tribune.com.pk/story/462083/networks-project-obama-re-elected-as-us-president/
Huffington Canada Media Critic J.J.. McCullough argues that an Obama win makes Canada the loser. Hmmm. Does this mean the US might get their mojo working again?!? Reclaim some cool factor?!? See: http://www.huffingtonpost.ca/jj-mccullough/obama-reelected_b_2087102.html#slide=1729275
Toronto's Democrats Abroad party late into the night! Congratulations! We love you! See: http://www.thestar.com/article/1283901
Donald Trump has a Twitter meltdown. Calls for a march on the White House and a revolution after Obama wins! One wag wonders if the Donald doesn't know what happens to nasty billionaires during a revolution! See: http://www.thestar.com/news/world/uselection/article/1283966--u-s-election-donald-trump-s-twitter-freakout-and-the-best-jokes-in-response
Donald Trump fires Obama + calls for a march on the white house + revolution! Seems "the Donald" doesn't get the democracy thing! Trump Trump! Will somebody finally tell him he's the one who is fired?!?
Oh noooooooooooo! A Republicans worst nightmare: Obama rocks on! Kid Rock no help!
Drat! Foiled! Romney troops grab the money and run. Mitt and "the Donald" wonder if there are some things money can't buy?!? Flee Mitt! Flee! Flee!
Earlier:
Meanwhile south of the true north strong and cold, it's election night in the USA. This will be a separate blog. Ontario Teacher Politics continues on the blog that follows after this "Win with Wynne". I usually don't cover US politics. Tonight I will because I think we need a Canucks Guide to Election Night. Plus let's admit it. This is real exciting too if you are hooked on politics like me!
Back to the future? Hey, what year is it now in the US?!? Is it the same as here in Canada???
Coverage of the US election race is currently blowing most everything else off the Canadian news until Wednesday at least. The polls show Obama + Romney in a dead heat in perhaps the closest US election since JF Kennedy + Nixon in 1960!
What have Kennedy + Obama got in common? A very very close election call for the Democrats?
I'm not sure how much to trust the polls anymore but it will be real interesting to see the results. Canadians seem to love Obama but is he the best US president for Canada when it comes to our bilateral trade? That's not for sure. Don't get me wrong, I really like Obama but then again his education policy is somewhere to the far right of Conservative Tim Hudak! If I were American I think Mitt Romney would totally freak me out. He makes our social conservatives seem like red communists!
I'm not sure I've ever been able to wrap my head around US politics. Unfortunately our news coverage seems to just mimic our southern neighbours rather than help us think this through for ourselves as Canadians.
The only exceptions I know of are TVO's Agenda with Steve Paikin, and the Huffington Post. Tonight Agenda will rerun Steve's show with the great debate on "Canada's Pick For President?" If you don't give a hoot about the rest of the US election coverage please still check out this video for more info on his show : http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=1jK-vkUZumY&feature=youtu.be
Steve Paikin has an online link happening but it doesn't seem to work on my computer. Will see what I can do! He is posting on Twitter.
Paikin wonders about the polls too. Tomorrow he will review the journalists and agency election calls to compare them with the actual results.
Biased? Who me?!? It's hard to believe there's even a debate about the core issues. See above.
The Idiots Guide to the US Election 2012: You can use the Huffington Post guide to make some sense of the numbers as they roll in tonight. There's even a chart to know when to expect the different state results in each time zone and why they are important. Plus a neato interactive map to play with as you try to predict the results. A political junkies dream come true. Oh boy! Now this is right up my alley! Check out the Huffington Post at: http://www.huffingtonpost.co.uk/2012/11/04/us-election-2012-how-does-it-work_n_2073136.html?utm_hp_ref=canada&ir=Canada
Huffington also provides a live link to news updates, polls and their blog. Wow! See: http://www.huffingtonpost.com/2012/11/01/presidential-election-2012-live_n_2048946.html?ir=Canada&utm_hp_ref=canada&ncid=edlinkusaolp00
An interesting variety of Canadian politicos, news faces + other prominent Canadians are asked who they think would be best for Canada. See: http://www.huffingtonpost.ca/2012/11/06/whos-better-for-canada-obama-romney_n_2079228.html?utm_hp_ref=canada&ncid=edlinkusaolp
Why the heck are Canadians interested in the US election anyway? Disdain or envy? See here: http://www.huffingtonpost.ca/2012/11/06/us-election-canada-politics_n_2083478.html
A list on whom to follow on Twitter tonight: https://twitter.com/HuffPostPol/election-day-night-2012
Angus Reid shows Canadians support Obama 7-1. Obama or Romney? Huffington wants to know what you think. Hey. Er... Er.. Er.. you can do that here too using my comment button below! Sniff. Sniff... Naw, just kidding, I'm here but if you want to spend the night with Huffington please do. It's got a great line up of features tonight for the Canadian political aficionado. Bravo! See: http://www.huffingtonpost.ca/2012/11/06/canada-obama-romney_n_2083823.html
OK enough Huffington and Paikin 4 now. In other news:
The New York Times has a handy live chart showing the election calls from each US news network at a glance. They seem to vary a fair bit. See: http://elections.nytimes.com/2012/results/president/network-calls?smid=tw-nytimes
The Toronto Stars Live Election coverage is provided by the reporters and editors who are stationed all over the place from Toronto across the states. They are constantly sending in live updates that are being posted on a bulletin board. One might get some hot tips on how its going but I find it rather confusing. See: http://livenews.thestar.com/Event/LIVE_at_1130_am_Monday_Full_coverage_of_the_US_election
TV CP 24 redeems itself somewhat tonight after the Wynne debacle [Grr! Grr! Grr!] by providing live US Election coverage. Nowhere near as comprehensive as the biggies but struggles to keep it Canadian.
Obama has been attacked relentlessly during the election for being soft on the unions. The want collective bargaining in their state constitutions, and a lot of folk consider that downright fascist or commie. See: http://thehill.com/homenews/campaign/265663-unions-aim-to-lock-collective-bargaining-into-state-constitutions
This election ad isn't a sick joke! If you think the attempts to demonize teachers in Ontario are bad, just be glad you are not a union member in the US. Mitt fights very dirty! Of course our counterparts stateside are blamed for whatever ails. The unions, including teachers, are being portrayed as "Obama's Civilian Army"
The AFO [American Federation of Labour] has a survey on how it's members in Ohio, a swing state, will vote. See: https://docs.google.com/file/d/0B1GF_14XMVZ_eV8zc3BCT1Z1WkE/edit
Former PC Prime Minister Brian Mulroney of course supports Romney and is very cocky about it. Wonder if Mitt can sing "Irish Eyes are Smiling" like Reagan + he did? In all fairness his comments on how the election will impact the Keystone XL Alberta pipeline are interesting. See: http://www.ipolitics.ca/2012/11/06/mulroney-romney-will-take-it-by-a-walk/
The National Post Comment lists the cons of an Obama win for Canada: http://fullcomment.nationalpost.com/2012/11/05/michael-den-tandt-canada-offers-obama-its-unrequited-love/
A win for Canada! A Michigan ballot initiative to block new Windsor-Detroit bridge is defeated!
US ex patriots "Democrats Abroad" in Toronto gathering to party tonight at the downtown Sheraton Centre. I will try to find out where the "Republicans Abroad" are gathering in Toronto tonight. Are there any? ;-) I swear I have never met one but then again I don't ask much.
OK. Fair is fair! There are some! The US "Republicans Abroad" are gathering at the Harbour Sports Grille on the Queens Quay here in Toronto. Looks like a business crowd. You can see both groups on CP 24.
More links to follow. I will try to set you up with some good ones my fellow Canucks! Enjoy!
To my US readers! We love you but.....................................WTF was that all about!?!?!?!?
