Opening Statement

Win with Wynne?

Could the OLP win the next election with Wynne? Hmmmm. Stay tuned for the latest news links!

The announcement is delayed until 6:12pm, I would guess for maximum evening news coverage. CTV is covering the announcement live on news channel CP 24.

Kathleen Wynne announces her OLP leadership bid to a full house tonight.

Unbelievable!!!! The CTV reporter yaks away analyzing a print copy of Wynnes speech while she is actually announcing her leadership bid in the background! I can't hear her and his big fat head is in the way!!! He says let's listen for a few seconds but then that was it. All I could hear was her telling everyone she's a lesbian. #$@&%^# !!! I screamed at my TV set! I cursed my misfortune being stuck at home on the sofa watching this buffoonery instead of actually being there in person like I'd planned to do. I am sitting up speechless starring at my invite. I should have said yes James. Alas! Alas! Alas!

I will find a video or audio copy of the speech as soon as I  f*&#$^g can!

See and hear Kathleen Wynnes speech on her Facebook page. Think about it first by yourself before you let anybody, including me, tell you what it means! See: http://www.facebook.com/WynneFans/app_57675755167

Commentary: A good Liberal stump speech stressing the key ideas of unity, and finding a middle ground to build a better life for everybody in our province. Hopes, responsibilities, hearts and mind; all the key words are there. Kathleen is forceful but friendly and in charge with her delivery. Praise for Dalton is to be expected, one has to honour their former leader, no matter what she does afterwards. We mostly hear generalities about how she will move forward, this is just a theme speech.

Verdict? Wynne needs to throw us a bone or two or three if she thinks she is going fix things with teachers. The damage is all ready done and it might well be too late to reverse the OLP's swan dive from grace by next spring. Wynne could prove good in rebuilding the party if she is ready to settle in for the long haul. I have met and worked with her numerous times over the years. I believe she is genuine and sincere. She is also a politician. I can see her as an effective Liberal opposition leader. Win or lose the spring provincial election as the new party leader, either way she would certainly have her work cut out for her.

There you go.

Ha. Well, that was fun. I KNOW some of you will both strongly agree and disagree with me dear readers. Please listen and watch her speech for yourself. There is the comment box at the bottom of this blog. Have your say, but let's be constructive. It might be hard if you think she needs a swift kick in the butt but show us your best side. Isn't that what we tell our students?

It's official. She wouldn't repeal Bill 115. It stays in place. Here's the Toronto Star article on her speech. That's pretty quick. It was posted on line within an hour. Also see the bit about Cheri DiNovo saying she's not afraid of Gerard Kennedy running again in her riding. What else could she say? http://www.thestar.com/news/canada/politics/article/1282940--kathleen-wynne-gets-endorsements-even-before-launching-ontario-liberal-leadership-bid

The OLP and NDP teacher battle lines now seem clearly set! Here is the motion approved at the NDP's weekend meet calling for the repeal of Bill 115. Nothing unclear, ambiguous or open to interpretation. Gotta love the NDP'ers for being policy wonks! It's quite obvious they plan to pull the teacher support rug out from under the Liberals as far as they can. They just might finally do it too. Wonder if Kennedy or Pupatello will run against Bill 115, if they run at all? Poopy probably wouldn't. See: http://cupe.on.ca/d2086/Ontario-NDP-Resolution

The Agenda Blog reports: http://theagenda.tvo.org/blog/agenda-blogs/can-liberals-win-wynne

The National Post's Scot Stinson considers why Wynne didn't meet teacher demands in her speech. She's a centre left progressive Liberal playing to the centre right fiscal Liberals to position herself as a centralist candidate everyone can support. Nice analysis! Hey, isn't that called playing both ends against the middle?!? See: http://fullcomment.nationalpost.com/2012/11/06/scott-stinson-race-to-replace-mcguinty-stuck-in-the-middle-as-candidates-plot-centrist-course/

Global Toronto News weighs in. This article notes both Wynne and Murray are gay. It seems like the reporters are trying to seem painstakingly progressive in pointing out that if either of them wins Ontario would have it's "first openly gay premier" Do you think Hudak won't subtly make a big issue out of that in the boonies? It will be interesting to see how [if?] the public reacts. Don't think the media haven't thought this through. See: http://www.globaltoronto.com/pages/story.aspx?id=6442747434&

Xtra: Canada's Gay + Lesbian News reports on Wynne's announcement. Main focus is her stand on the same Ontario issues as pretty much everyone else. See: http://www.xtra.ca/public/National/Kathleen_Wynne_wants_to_be_Premier_of_Ontario-12759.aspx

Martin Regg Cohn has been busy! He's all ready got his column out in which he compares Murray and Wynne. He points out their Toronto orientation might alienate them the most outside our city. See: http://www.thestar.com/news/canada/politics/article/1283186--cohn-liberal-candidates-need-to-show-they-can-build-fences-in-rural-areas

CTV news coverage notes she spoke highly about McGuinty. See:  http://toronto.ctvnews.ca/kathleen-wynne-enters-race-to-replace-mcguinty-1.1024575

CBC reports: http://www.cbc.ca/news/canada/toronto/story/2012/11/05/toronto-liberal-leadership-race.html

The first attack ad against Wynne has been posted. Somebody has been busy over the weekend going through their old news article and photo files. See: http://paper.li/danicklafrance/1315537591

Her campaign theme will not be "Win with Wynne" Too bad! It's short and catchy. Everyday folk and the media love that. "Time for Change" worked well for the OLP. "Stop the gravy train" for Rob Ford.

The music played at her launch was by Pink. No not Floyd.

Here's the Global profile of Kathleen Wynne: http://www.globaltoronto.com/profile+kathleen+wynne/6442746464/story.html

To go inside or out?!?  A big concern is that she voted for Bill 115. For a map to the event along with an invite to an ETT teacher protest outside go to: http://www.cbc.ca/news/politics/story/2012/11/05/toronto-liberal-leadership-race.html?cmp=rss&utm_source=twitterfeed&utm_medium=twitter

Here are the ETT teacher protesters waiting at the door for Kathleen to arrive. They want her to denounce Bill 115. Wouldn't that be great? Here's a photo you can retweet:: https://twitter.com/suntooz/status/265582105243840512/photo/1

The ETT protesters got into the meeting hall but then were told to leave.

While the OLP fiddles about OSSTF gets ready to put fire to their feet. Selective job actions are scheduled to kick in Wednesday. See: http://www.thestar.com/news/gta/article/1283154--toronto-and-halton-high-school-teachers-ramp-up-job-action

CTV reports: http://toronto.ctvnews.ca/first-wave-of-ont-high-school-teachers-set-to-launch-strike-action-1.1026256

OSSTF strike signs are being distributed. Latest news on Tuesday night is that the selective job actions have been postponed from Wednesday until midnight Sunday!

CityTV claims "exploratory talks" have resumed between the MOE and OSSTF and speculates on a possible 11th hour deal! One wonders where that leaves ETFO + CUPE if they sign a separate deal?!? See: http://www.citytv.com/toronto/citynews/news/local/article/234737

OSSTF job actions include teachers and workers in 8 school boards for now. 2 are Catholic. OSSTF includes ECE, clerical and maintenance staff in some of our boards. These staff employees will of course be required to go along with their union strategy too. See: http://www.osstf.on.ca/MR-Nov-06-2012

Hear ye! hear ye! A letter to Simcoe.com points out that our Catholic teachers did not approve the MOU. OECTA Provincial executive did it for us. The writer claims part of the deal was that they didn't take it to our teachers for ratification. I believe I have heard that too but will confirm. Read the letter at: http://www.simcoe.com/opinion/letters/article/1529623--province-has-cast-teachers-as-the-enemy

OECTA's Bad Boy Brock in an OSSTF cap hooks up with ETFO President Sam Hammond in Halton.

Otre? In other news:

With higher post secondary attainment rates is Ontario trading off quality for quantity education? How about at the secondary level too? We know Janet Ecker is a right winger and the group making the presentations sound like it too. This article bears merit but I'm still worried where they are headed with this. See:  http://queensparktoday.wordpress.com/2012/11/03/hello-world/

Good news? New book of "Letters [Public Library]" by author Kurt Vonnegut [Slaughterhouse-5, Breakfast of Champions, Slapstick, Cats Cradle etc etc etc...] is released. How did he get by? Says he: "I numb my intellect with scotch and water." And so it went and on and on and on. See: http://www.theatlantic.com/entertainment/archive/2012/11/i-numb-my-intellect-with-scotch-and-water-kurt-vonneguts-daily-routine/264561/

Vonnegut [1922-2007] lives!

David, the most interesting part of the Simcoe Article is this line: "some locals are looking at switching from OECTA to the Elementary Teachers Federation of Ontario (ETFO)." WOW - now THAT would shake OECTA to its core. What units would these be?

Hmmmm. I'm not sure. It gets said a lot in the comments to my blogs. I will ask around. Dunno if its a coincidence but check my blog out again.

Wynne the Liberal tyrant is true to form in her refusal to commit to a repeal bill 115 and with her shabby handling of teacher protesters who again only wished to utilize their democratic right to protest. Shame on Wynne. A Liberal wolf in wolf's clothing.

Wynne has NO chance. The Liberals are dead in the water. That our union played nice with them while they were already a dying animal makes me sick. What the hell was our OECTA Provincial leadership thinking?

Anonymous said...

They were thinking of themselves. Not oecta members. The truth will set us free from O'Dwyer.

Will Mario Bernardo campaign for Wynne and recruit others to campaign for her as he has done in the past? It's too bad teachers don't stick together the way Wynne stuck by her cronies. It's barely been two months since she voted to support Bill 115 and now she's talking about "repairing the relationship". What a joke.

Kulture Kult Ink said...

My best guess, and that's all it is, will be that OECTA Provincial will be rootin' for Wynne + will enddorse her in a spring election.

Anonymous said...

Then it's time to ban all additional charges on OECTA members paycheques to fund political campaigns (i.e. variable charges). They funded the Liberals last time and look how they turned on teachers! Ban all political campaign funding of parties by OECTA Provincial Office!

Can the votes on the MOU and the COP votes be brought forward by an application/complaint under the Freedom of Information Act?

Kulture Kult Ink said...

They were publically released the only problem being nobody can seem to find them. I am all over this and should have them soon. It is truley bizarre.

Anonymous said...

Thanks for looking into that...OECTA members need to know who voted and how they voted on the MOU (Provincial Executive). OECTA members also need to know how their UNIT PRESIDENT voted at the COP vote on the MOU.
