Hi David, Can you post a list of the local president's names, contact info and the units they represent? These would be the ones who ratified the MOU. This would allow concerned members to lobby them and ask them to reconsider their earlier decision and perhaps vote against the PE members whose bad advice they followed. I get the feeling that more than one politician at the local unit level is hiding out while all this is going on. We need to contact them and make them accountable for their errors and try to change their minds to do the right thing to support the principled of unionism.

Teacher voters can cross reference the unit president names by looking at the back of the OECTA Agenda issue for Dec 2012. Pictures, names and units of the presidents are on the back page so we can know who is on our side and who isn't (judging from the COP vote of July 10).

If anybody can provide the presidents names, locals and contact info in an organized easy to post list I can add it. Otherwise see info added above on blog. I am now working on 2 more very important blogs for early this week, first maybe late tonight or early tomorrow, second to follow in rapid sucession. Stay tuned!

Whoa! My regrets! Thanks 4 the heads up. I posted the links to Agenda and 4 the unit contact info to the blog. Actually takes less room and is very convenient. Odd the votes haven't been likewise available on the OECTA website, or did we missed them?! Happy trouble making, exercising your democratic membership rights to try getting things balanced + right!

I just posted this comment on the REWT facebook page. I'm not sure that this is the right place for it, but since I have put it out there it may as well be close to the top of this blog.

As tricky as it is to navigate through the minutes of the OLRB hearing it doesn’t hold a candle to the ratification of any OETCA local’s MOU imposed agreement. I just don’t get it. It is beyond my ability to understand.

How could any teacher in this province have gone through the last six months and be OK with what is going on? How can OECTA members watch OSSTF agreements being rejected one after another and then approve theirs? How can they watch ETFO members outside their schools picketing against Bill 115? Surely, no other group of people can understand better what it took to get them there, much less a group of people who had their hands tied behind their backs by their own provincial executive. Why would you miss this chance to vent your anger and having your rights so roughshodly trampled upon by the government and the very people whom you have paid to represent you? What kind of snake oil has been sold to you?

There is absolutely nothing to lose by sending these agreements negotiated under the duress of the MOU back to where they came from. There is plenty to lose by rolling over and showing your soft underbelly to the right wing maniacs who are driving this whole thing. There is nothing that will improve your standing by accepting the blame for their transactions against the sensibilities of a responsibly run economy. You will not win their respect and admiration. On the contrary, you will only succeed in amplifying the disdain they already hold for you.

It doesn’t add up no matter how I look at it. There is something much bigger going on here.

To those going to the AGM, get placards with names of those who voted in favour! Start the revolution! Placards, signs, whistles, pots and pans! Bring it on to what would otherwise be a dull herd of sheep. Think of the medai exposure!

ETFO Steve: Having your own provincial exec evoke Bill 115 to stop members from complaining to the OLRB about the MOU + then having everybody separate + apart + kept in the dark doesn't help. Still, you are absolutely right: there is no excuse for us as members. The strikes + protests are everywhere.

As you probably know, this is an OECTA Dissident site. There are a few other active groups too. As sad as it sounds I think we are going to need to ask for our colleagues in the other unions for your understanding and support as we begin to rebuild a teachers activist movement again from the grassroots back up.

Quite frankly I'd say the odds right now are that OECTA will not survive the palace coup and the members are divided and apathetic. Still no reason not to support you all in your brave and necessary stand against MOU + Bill 115.

Kindly know I will continue to press for change and support for your protest efforts here on this blog. My daily teacher strike, job actions and Ont political news links will continue here for all my readers: OECTA, OSSTF, ETFO + CUPE alike. Also my support for the OECTA Metro 7 and other dissident groups as we try to rally what's left of our troops.

I'm glad to post your comments here for our members. The truth hurts but we need to hear it.

In solidarity!

David,

I came to be a follower of your blog back in September when I was looking for information. Your blog seems to be the only source of education labour information presented in one place and from many sides. I am grateful for this service you provide. That it is an OECTA dissident page doesn’t really make much difference to me. That there are not many more dissidents does come as a surprise. In this respect I wish you luck. I am in favour of one union to represent all teachers, but I realize I may be long gone before that happens! I am only looking for avenues that will help me to process and understand what is going on. If there are other places to do this they have been very difficult to find.

I have been able to glean from other discussions that the ratification of these local agreements may be because OECTA members feel that OSSTF and ETFO are only fighting to save their gratuities. I know that this is not the case for me as our local negotiated our gratuity away several years ago. I do not have one to fight for. That accumulated sick days that were contractually awarded can just be taken away is akin to having your bank account raided. This should cause some concern for everyone.

I have also been given to believe that it may be from fear over losing separate school funding. I can understand this in light of what has happened in Newfoundland and Quebec, but this needs to be a separate discussion. It needs to happen after Bill 115 is repealed. Support for agreements negotiated while an MOU gun is pointed at your head cannot be used as ransom to preserve funding that can be taken away as cynically, and as easily, as your collective bargaining rights, by a government who puts themselves above retribution from the people and the courts. This too should cause some concern for everyone.

How is it that in this information age that people who profess to be teachers can be, “kept in the dark,” as you say? Nothing adds up. I am left with the nagging feeling that there has been something more sinister afoot.

Hi David I would like to take this opportunity to explain to you and your readers why it is that your provincial executive has behaved in the shameful manner that it has. People ask: why would the PE deceive their membership and use procedural tactics such as invoking bill 115 in their OLRB defence? Why would the PE use stalling tactics and a campaign of silence to sow disunity into the rank and file and force them to vote or in some cases not even vote in their interests? The answer is simple. OECTA is too close to the Liberal party. If you examine the behaviour of the PE it is identical to the manner in which the Liberals govern. The govern as lawyers do. There is no procedural tactic they will not employ no matter how shameful to see their will done. If OECTA is to recover from their shameful present they must embrace a new future. One that is free from the dishonour of close association to the Liberal party.

To rebuild OECTA we need the meaningful type of reform listed in the OECTA Bill of Rights. Otherwise, the typical OECTA member will once again have no say in the running of his/her union.Change the ban on Political Party Contributions to a vote by every OECTA member on Political Party Contributions and you have a 100% workable document. Ask your Unit Presidents to endorse it and pass it into OECTA law and if they say we need 90% vote-look at the MOU vote:5 to 3- 5 out of 8 votes less than 90% approval, no?

I think that since teachers do so much work on a voluntary basis- ie extra curriculars we should make the whole teaching occupation into a voluntary position. This would save the Ontario government lots of money and refill the coffers without any imposition to anyone! Maybe the next MOU should contain this provision- it should pass as there is no ratification vote by members required as is in other unions in Ontario! The government could save a bundle and OECTA provincial could make even more government friends!

In some US states teachers are paid extra for extra curriculars. I wonder if that would be a good idea here?
