Ann Hawkins Elected OECTA 1st VP 2013-14

Total Eligable Voters: 639/ Vores Cast 634/ Spoiled = 0

Votes:

Ann Hawkins 349
Sonia Di Petta 284

OECTA Provincial social justice advocate and MOU supporter Ann Hawkins was elected by a significant majority at OECTA AGM. In the election we had two strong candidates. Ann's decisive win makes me wonder if there might not be a "fear of Toronto" element to the voters' decision. Both James + Sonia are from a Toronto Unit. If both were elected there would have been 2 executive members from Toronto representing teachers from across the province.

I'm not convinced that considering the high proportion of our teachers from Toronto + the GTA that would have been inappropriate. However, it is a sensitive issue for our members outside Toronto. For example I am from Toronto OECTA TSU. I would've considered running for OECTA Provincial but didn't because there were all ready 2 good Toronto candidates who I support. I would not to further increase those fears or further split the vote for the other Toronto candidates. There were also other Toronto candidates of a similar mind.

The other possibility is that our membership is so divided on the OECTA MOU, many would not want the number 1 and 2 positions on executive both be officers who are opposed to the MOU.

I understand that Ann is none to enamoured with myself and this blog. That is quite understandable based upon the political civil war surrounding the MOU.  However, majority rules! Also I quite appreciate Ann's strong commitment to social justice. It is time to move on to fixing our union rather than fighting yesterday's battles. Congratulations to Ann Hawkins our OECTA Provincial 1st VP 2013-14.

One of my readers below comments that they believe it was because Ann ran a much better campaign and gave the better speech that she won. Ann was a very dynamic speaker. Sonia, most likely inadvertently, did have a rather cloying tone.

As a guy I didn't think the spiked shoe imagery used in her campaign was unbecoming or derogatory but it might well appear so from a woman's perspective. That concern has also been mentioned. Dunno. Sonia has stood quite solidly on her own two feet both in helping our members as need be against the supposed big boys out there in the political world + in fighting against the OECTA MOU strictly on principle. Personally, without prejudice, I though the symbol, in Sandra's case was kinda cool.

You have a very interesting take on this. But I don't think geography played a role this time around. I was at the AGM and Sonia's negative speech and Ann's incredible speech made the difference. Sonia only talked about herself, it was very negative with an insincere attempt to be sensitive. After that speech I think it was clear who was going to win. Plus I heard many women felt insulated that she branded herself with a stiletto shoe. I even saw some people wearing tshirts with the shiny shoe on the back, sadly they didn't realize how insulted people were and how many people were. Sonia was a great treasurer but she ran an awful campaign and Ann was flawless.

Ann is a great social justice advocate and we are fortunate to have her as our 1st VP. She and James will make a very strong team.

Funny, how different perspectives can be. I have been a delegate for a number of years and I too ( a woman) felt the Shoe Campaign was unique and suiting of Sonia. I found her speech passionate and certainly not negative at all. After the year we have had the members need to take action. I don't know how Ann who claims to be advacate of social justice could have voted in favour of the M.O.U and I could never support a candidate that voted for it. I believe the Toronto factor sadly cost her the election as she was the stronger candidate with a proven track record of working for the members.

Shoes really that is what this has come down to!! I can't believe it! We should be ashamed that this is our focus and not the issues! Good for Sonia for being an unapologetically femmine strong female!!!!
