TCDSB jobs: there's more to this job than meets the eye!

NOTE:

Some school boards, like the TCDSB, after eliminating teacher librarians to "balance the budget" [see "Links" below ...], have since implemented the unconscionable practice of hiring unemployed, highly qualified beginning teachers [BT's], fresh out of college to fill their shoes, with less benefits, rights and, oh by the way .... for much less pay too! [So much for being a "Catholic" board with a difference .... Now we see what that really means nowadays!!!]

Please note: Realistically speaking, these Library teckies will be very vulnerable to pressure from the board and administration NOT to follow the CUPE WTR instructions for fear of their jobs. Yup. And in the case of the TCDSB, they will be working on a temporary contract that helps the board get around the union membership issue too. What can OECTA/ CUPE do?!? Teachers: Please be extra sensitive to our desperate young colleagues plight!!! This is #@$@%! awful!!!

Be careful: The TCDSB's been looking to hiring BT's but .... for what?

Instructions for ALL Information Technology:

Here are the new work-to-rule instructions:

o Take breaks/lunch together with other CUPE Members
o Return all equipment to the employer at the end of each shift (phone/computer/
beeper/walkie talkies)
o Seek medical attention immediately for any workplace injuries
o Don’t allow volunteers to do our work
o Do not buy supplies with your own money
o Submit a travel time payment voucher when you are required by your supervisor to travel
o Refuse to handle chemicals if any of the following is not in place
o Workplace Hazardous Materials Information System (WHMIS) training
o Material Safety Data Sheet (MSDS) posted for each chemical
o All safety equipment required for handling the chemical
o Calling the MOL hot line for H/S Infractions
o Wear a work to rule wrist band and display work to rule materials
o Do not sign in when you report to work (unless you are the only one in the location -Health + Safety)
o Do not clear jams in photocopiers
o Get detailed requests for work in writing
o Do not perform repairs of any kind including repairs to photocopier
o Do not complete surveys of any kind from the employer
o Do not collect, spend or otherwise handle any cash
o No purchasing unless safety related
o Do not attend staff meetings unless on paid time
o Do not attend training
o No paperwork of any kind
o Do not update “Remedy” work log (IT)
o Do not complete or close “Remedy” work tickets (IT)
o Do not participate in Parent Councils
o Do not take over teacher duties to update their school websites
o Do not update department tracking system for computer/device repairs (ie.  Helpstar or Service programs)

NOTE:

It would seem CUPE has it's work especially cut out for them to define just what exactly many of our information teckies job description and duties entail!!! Also many of their Health and Safety procedures seem dicey and spottily enforced at best!!!

Instructions for ALL Paraprofessionals/Professionals:

Here are the new work-to-rule instructions:

o Completing all reports (incident/accident) as they occur
o Take breaks/lunch together with other CUPE Members
o All students still in the care of CUPE members at the end of the work day will be safely delivered to the care of the Principal or principal designate
o Return all equipment to the employer at the end of each shift (phone/ computer/ beeper/ walkie talkies)
o Seek medical attention immediately for any workplace injuries
o Don’t supervise college students
o Do not prepare or mount materials for student display boards
o Do not buy supplies with your own money
o Do not act as an attendant to your Supervisor (no errands, pick-ups, deliveries etc.)
o Submit a travel time payment voucher when you are required by your supervisor to travel
o Do not sign in when you report to work
o Get detailed requests for wok in writing
o Do not complete surveys of any kind from the employer
o Do not collect, spend or otherwise handle any cash
o No purchasing unless safety related
o Do not attend staff meetings unless on paid time
o Do not attend training
o Wear a work to rule wrist band and display work to rule materials
o No preparation of materials of any kind for class
o No work on bulletin boards
o Do not attend any Ministry project meetings
o Do not participate in Parent Councils

NOTE:

It's totally reprehensible how much our Paraprofessionals are forced to unofficially perform the role of "go boys and girls" for whatever admin, or maybe even our own teacher union members require them to do, perhaps often on a personal whim, sans a proper, complete job description clearly included in their contracts. Teachers too? Well, we wish CUPE every success in negotiating proper terms for their gainful, all around, employment in our schools.
