CONGRATULATIONS! This is my teacher free speech coverage of today's ETFO + CUPE tentative contract announcements in the mainstream and social media.
ETFO TENTATIVE DEAL
MOE Sandal's Press Conference: Liz announces that ETFO has reached a tentative deal. WTR is suspended pending the ratification vote! OSSTF education workers are to receive 5 days notice of pay deductions for continuing with their WTR. It will be up to the trustees to decide "when" they will issue the notice, which they should receive from the MOE by next Monday. CP24 carried the announcement live but cut off the media scrum! #%$@!!! See @ CTV
Scooped? ETFO will not meet with the media until tomorrow, while they meet internally first with their own members and leaders. Here is the ETFO media release @ ETFO
Here are the mainstream media news links @ CBC and @ Global and @ Star and @ Sun and @ City
ETERNALLY VIGILANT
I would think that in a member based union, WTR should not be lifted until the membership ratifies a tentative deal. I really didn't think ETFO or CUPE would do so, and have been quite surprised. Special thanks to ETFO Cb for clarifying:
ALSO NOTE
The ETFO Cb team had split lickety spit before Liz came back looking for her smiley photo with them. Whew! ;-)
ETFO will NOT be accepting any government payment for the co$t$ of the lengthy CB proce$$. Also seems like very good form under the circumstances too!
MOE Scandals: Divide and Conquer? Trustees can now pretty do as they please with the OSSTF education support workers. Alas! Teacher affiliate "solidarity" becomes increasingly diminished as each affiliate agrees to a separate deal, and Liz knows it! Time for one province wide union? See my blog above!
CUPE TENTATIVE DEAL
CP24 reported at noon today that CUPE has reached a tentative contract agreement. All WTR activities is suspended pending the member ratification vote. Details of the agreement won't be released until then @ CP24
CUPE's official communique is @ Here
CUPE also confirmed through Twitter @ LINK
MOE Sandals and CUPE make statements to the press. The mainstream media reports are @ Star and @ Globe and @ Global and @ Sun and @ City
ETERNALLY VIGILANT
One glitch in my books, take as you will: the CUPE Cb teams poses for a smiley photo with MOE Sandals! Cringe time! Otherwise, well done. Or ..... what do we teachers say?!? Oh yeah: Keep up the good work! :-)
IMHO, we still need to lead the charge, both teachers and education workers, to terminate Sandals as Minister Of Education for this long, drawn out and particularly nasty botched up round of CB! A helluva lot of good will is now gone for good due to her efforts or lack thereof!
[Unidentified CB'er in unused smiley shot ... ]
THE ULTIMATUM: The MOE's ultimatum of a Nov 1st deadline for an ETFO and CUPE contract deal had passed today, while everyone was waiting to see what the Wynne government will do next. They had threatened to withhold pay for WTR. Negotiations were continuing behind closed doors with a news blackout in effect. See my blog below! Here's the new's slant from earlier today @ Star

"Every union suspends strike action when they come to a deal. Every employer suspends their change of terms and conditions when a deal is signed. If this was a full scale strike action, or a lock out, would the members stay out until a vote? No. Our strike action is only suspended. If the agreement is voted down, the strike action resumes and so does the ability of boards to dock our members pay."

So much for the great ETFO...their members heard they had a tentative deal not from their union but from the lips of a Minister of Ed who had threatened them and issued an ultimatum! ETFO folded and saved Sandals political career...disgusting!
