Oh Cannabis: 420 Toronto -Permit Denied!

Update: Good news! Cannabis activists take note! 420 Toronto festivities will proceed at Nathan Phillips Square without the damn permit! Are you into a little, much needed peaceful, civil disobedience too? More @ 420! @ Facebook! Also see @ Oh Cannabis! @ Toke!

Bad news! This year's 420 Toronto festivities, which falls a few mere months away from legalization this summer, can't be held in Nathan Phillips Square outside Toronto City Hall! At least not legally! The permit has been denied! Why? See below:

Hello Mr. Goodwin,

We've reviewed your most recent application for use of Nathan Phillips Square on April 20, 2018 and unfortunately as with your original application we are still unable to permit the 420 Comedy Festival for the same reasons.

Although the 420 Toronto Comedy Festival application states that it will have speakers, vendors and entertainment all of which are acceptable activities it is the other activities that we know to take place at this event that are of concern and why a permit cannot be issued. Through research and in speaking with Yonge Dundas Square and Toronto Police Services staff about the previous events held at Yonge and Dundas Square over the last several years it is clear that smoking of Cannabis takes place at this event.

Current City By- Laws prohibit smoking on City of Toronto Public Squares, including Nathan Phillips Square and in front of Municipal Buildings entrances like City Hall. Attached below is the web link to the applicable By-Law information on the City of Toronto Website:

-Smoking on City of Toronto Public Squares is prohibited under City Bylaw (MCC 636/237) Article III.
The City of Toronto Smoking Bylaw (MCC 709) prohibits smoking within 9 metres of entrances and exits of any building that is used by the public @ [LINK]

Further, at the time of your event current Federal Cannabis Laws will still be in effect and Cannabis is still listed as a Schedule II drug under the Controlled Drug and Substances Act @ [LINK] @ [LINK]

We do understand that Federal Cannabis legalization is expected in the coming months and that 420 Toronto has been a part of that movement and wish to celebrate that victory however given the reasons stated above we are unable to issue you a permit for use of Nathan Philips Square.

SOME NOTES:

So much for Toronto as a "people's city"! Our cannabis community just doesn't count folks!

So Mayor Tory is a well known conservative of some standing, eh?

Pffffffft! How disappointing! Quite obviously, "Toronto the Good" doesn't have much business acumen. Not during the John Tory Years!

It's so obvious! April 420 could help launch our city as a world cla$$ pot touri$m de$tination. It's a big day, for pot heads around the world. And this year, Toronto has a whole lot to celebrate, and show off too.

Or do we?

Not at Toronto City Hall! For shame!

Still, our thanks go out to 420 Toronto organizer and well known local cannabis activist-entrepreneur Chris Goodwin! Chris has certainly gone all out this year! To help us most fittingly celebrate the end of a very shameful period in Canadian history -our unjust cannabis laws; the end of prohibition!

What better place to celebrate, than at our municipal seat of government?!? You know -where they are supposed to be working for us! To say good-bye to the end of an awful era!

But it seems not!

So, where do we go from here? To celebrate together anyways? Like we always do?

The provincial election's on June 7th! Wonder what Premier Kathleen Wynne thinks?

No no! One can only imagine!

Then about the NDP's Andrea Horwath? Too afraid of her own shadow?

Or PC Doug Ford???

Then again, maybe a lil' good ol' fashioned civil disobedience is well in order? Or ... or ... or ...
